Dahlia Diaries: Marie Antoinette
Introducing Dahlia Diaries! A new series exploring the history and lore of our favorite flower, starting with the iconic Marie Antoinette and her dahlia namesake.
Marie Antoinette was the epitome of extravagance, so it’s fitting that one of the most beautiful and high maintenance flowers would bear her name!
Their connection is more than a namesake, though. While the dahlia originated in (modern day) Mexico, it was first introduced to Europe in around 1787, then kept hidden from the public for almost a decade. The dahlias exclusivity and beauty made it the perfect addition to the lush gardens of Versailles - commonly known as a peaceful sanctuary for Marie Antoinette and her guests.
So the next time you find yourself in a field full of dahlias, see if you can spot Marie’s large purple petals and bold golden center. Just as iconic as the queen herself!
