How to Cut Dahlias for More Blooms All Season Long

Knowing when to cut is just as important as knowing where. Harvest too early, and the bloom may not develop properly. Wait too long, and you may shorten its vase life and miss an opportunity to encourage the plant to send up more flowers.

Timing Matters - Oh, The LIES!

Unlike what many gardeners have heard (and what the internet says), dahlias do continue opening after they're picked.

For the longest vase life, harvest blooms when they're about 30–40% open. This can be tricky for beginners, so here's an easy way to tell:

  • Smaller decorative dahlias should resemble a capital "D" when viewed from the side, with the back of the bloom appearing relatively flat.
  • Large dinnerplate varieties should look more like a "C", with the petals still cupping forward.

As the flower continues to open in the vase, the petals will gently flex backward, creating that full, dramatic dahlia look.

Cutting at this stage gives you fresher blooms and allows you to enjoy the entire opening process indoors.

Don't Be Shy With Your Cuts

When harvesting, resist the temptation to snip just below the flower head.

Instead, follow the stem down to a set of leaves or a branching point and make your cut there. This encourages the plant to develop stronger side shoots, which means more stems and more flowers in the weeks ahead.

It's like a little haircut. Pruning now pays off with a fuller, more productive plant later.

Keep Them Blooming

A few simple habits can dramatically increase flower production:

  • Harvest regularly, even if you don't need flowers indoors.
  • Cut deeply into the plant rather than taking short stems.
  • Water consistently during hot weather.
  • Feed as needed to support continued flowering.
  • Remove spent blooms to encourage new buds.

The more you cut, the more dahlias tend to bloom. It's one of the many reasons gardeners become completely obsessed with them.

Enjoy the Flowers

Growing dahlias isn't just about creating beautiful garden beds. They're meant to be enjoyed up close! Use them in bouquets and arrangements that bring joy.

So don't be afraid to cut them. Your plants will thank you with even more blooms.

Voila. Enjoy!
